Windows 7

I got a new laptop yesterday with windows 7.  With ecu editor it seems save as Vista, you need to set ecu editor to run as admin, as well as I think FTD needs to run as admin if flashing gen 1 bikes.

Quick video showing how to do that.
www.boostbysmith.com/Videos/run-as-admin.wmv

Also, the gauge data screen looks a little different, there are a few characters out of place, but still seems to work fine.

Thanks for the video Greg. I only wish it worked as well on my laptop as it does in your video. If you would allow me to describe the problems I am having maybe the solutions will follow though I don't necessarily expect the solutions from you but I do welcome any advice you can offer.

I have a laptop that is equipt with a dual core Intel 64bit processor and running Windows 7 Ultimate. When I set ECUeditor to run as administrator as you describe; after closing and restarting the editor I get a dialog that says, "Application can't be started. Contact the application vendor." When I click details I get the report that follows at the end of this message.

My work around was to create a partition and install Windows XP Pro in a dual boot configuration with Windows 7 on my C: drive and XP on my X: drive. ECUeditor ran fine but when I went to flash it reported that it can't find FDT.exe. It appears that ECUeditor looks for FDT.exe in the Program Files folder on the C: drive. So I installed FDT on Windows 7 hoping that ECUeditor would see in on the C: drive and run it from XP. The rub is that since I have a 64 bit processor and am running Windows 7 64 bit edition it installs 32bit programs in a folder called "Program Files (x86)" and 64 bit programs in the "Program Files" folder. Since ECUeditor and FDT are 32bit programs they are installed in the "Program Files (x86)" folder are not found.

It appears now that if I wipe my hard drive and install XP as the C: drive and the 7 on a D: or orther drive that ECUeditor and FDT will play nicely together under Windows XP on my 64 bit Intel laptop. I tried on more thing before I go to that extreme. I copied the Renesas folder from my Program Files folder on my XP drive to the 64 bit Program Files folder in my C: drive. It worked, at least I think. Running ECUeditor under XP when I clicked on the Flash button it found FDT.exe in the C:\Program Files folder and ran it. I haven't tested it by flashing my ECU yet but will let you know if the work around works. I am hoping that one day it will work without going to these extremes.

Here are the details results:

just make a new folder that doesn't have 32 or 64 in it if the only issue is it can't find FTD

Will you check what is the install directory structure in win7 where FDT is found. Maybe I can fix it for beta 2.1

Im running 32 bit and it installs in regular place, u think 64 bit installs ftd into that x32 directory listed below

Here is what a customer emailed me, i think he was running 64 bit windows 7

When I right click and go to properties in the "start in" box it says "C:\Program files (x86)\Renesas\FDT.exe".

This is simple to fix, but just need exact information, e.g.

If File.Exists("C:\Program Files\Renesas\FDT4.06\" & "FDT.EXE") Then FDTpath = "C:\Program Files\Renesas\FDT4.06\"

Below is my issues with win 7 64bit and my laptop.(hp dv7 3165dx)
Issue is will not start ie load up at all.
Issue 2 if i get it to load comport will not stay on the port it installs when i try to connect to engine data.
The only way to get it to load is when i downloaded ECU it put a setup .exe on my desktop to install it.After installation you can use it to start the ECU editor but it errors out like the actual short cut does, but if i right click the setup.exe and click run as admin it loads up ie can flash etc.. but no engine data ie can't connect comport.
Tried having another adapter plugged into another usb port and tried to connect again no go (smithabusa suggest that i try this idea via friend of a friend)
Well hopefully some one with more brain power than me can help me get through this.
I'm really not liking Windows 7 at all. I spend some serious jack on a laptop to do
the ecu thing and some of my other needs and wham it bit me in the @ss.
Please advise...

Maddogs re can flash etc.. but no engine data ie can't connect comport.
Curious if you can flash the ECU but no com port ? If it can't find the com port or is not identifying it then how is it flashing the ECU ?
My customers experience with 7 was on the latest ASUS laptop that he also specifically brought to do flashing. After exhausting his own knowledge was taken back to his tech he brought it from who could also not get editor to run on it. His tech loaded it to another laptop sam brand and configuration and it worked. The only difference he noted was one laptop had this Aten convertor plugged into it ................... he then connected the convertor to laptop that wouldn't work and has not had a problem since ..................... convertor is just left plugged in with wire taped to side of laptop ..................... don't ask me to explain why it does but it solved his problem and he spent several weeks trying to get windows 7 to run editor. Note here apparently windows 7 kept re configuring itself back to standard configuration no matter how many times it was configured manually.
I run a Toshiba Tecra workstation as it's one of the few laptops that still come with a serial port as found for many applications I use on bikes that use serial port type connection one would have to try several usb / serial adaptors before the correct baud rate was found. To complicate this further some software needed different convertors ie baud rates. I mention this as different brand than the Aten may not have the same effect as was found to solve the problem we had here ?
Hope this helps ? If not a few customers I have simply buy a cheap early model laptop running XP and use that for their garage / Editor laptop.
Windows being windows doesn't help !

Well i am confused to.Weird i can flash the ecu but not read the engine data.
My laptop does not have a serial port.
It's gotta be something with the way windows 7 home premium 64bit
handles the way software is launched and used..
Just real disappointed spent some big green on this laptop not to be able to use
it for my ecu tuning(basically bought it for this adventure ie my busa)sucks.
well maybe petrik can someday set up ECU Editor for win 7...but way too many XP user to bail and start over...lol..

Very interesting, we really need to boild down what is the root cause as for some this is working for some this is not working. What we need to document is:
- What windows version, e.g.64 or 32 bit
- What other software running on the computer
- Which version of ftdi

The latest ftdi is this one, but have not yet tested it so can not comment how well it works:

Well my plan in the next few days is to totally start from scratch with this laptop.I"m going to restore the laptop back to the way i bought it. Which means no A\V none of the apps i installed.Going to put it back just like the first time i booted it up,And then try to get ECU Editor running.
As far as ftdi i used what ever was in with ECU when I downloaded
ECU Editor 2.etc not the beta one
Well hopefully i can have luck getting it up fully..lol
And by the Petrik Your the man your app is IMO the chit :)
Plus way much more to offer than a PCV...
Thankx,All

Hey,smithabusa
Those toshiba laptops were they AMD processors or Intel?
And are those of us having issues what are the processors?
Mine is a AMD just trying to see if AMD processors or AMD chip sets maybe the culprit
Reason i ask is i saw a usb driver that AMD is using for for there chip set.
I'm just trying to get my issues resolved and ECU up and running on this machine..lol
Thankx,maddog

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/67567-administrator-account.html

basically you need to go to programs, accessories, right click on command prompt, run as administrator.

when it loads type the following
net user administrator /active:yes

then in the start menu log off.

Then when you go to log back in there should be a new ADMIN account that you will need to download ecu editor in, install com port driver.

Give that a whirl

Greg,

I tried that 5 times. Same problem. It was downloading to programs(x86). I downloaded it to programs but that didn't work either.

So you are talking about gen1 and ftd.exe program being in the wrong spot? Providing the needed info to help makes this a lot easier, go into win explored and manually copy renesas folder from the x86 folder into c:\program files directory.
