Hi Guys! Posted a "Hello" on the newbies page to get myself introduced. I thread starter states, I have a 2003 Yamaha R1 and really want to start playing about with the ECU once I have learnt what I need to do once I get in there. I have already have a PC3 connected to the bike and have had it custom mapped for the bike and was really impressed with the result it gave. While I was getting it mapped by the guys at Dyno Ecosse (excellent guys who know their stuff) they said that they could have fine tuned my map better if I had been running the newer PC3 version for my bike i.e. the USB version (mine is the older serial port version) the USB version would allow them to have fine tuned in increments of 250rpm instead of the 500rpm mine offers.
Anyway, this got me thinking along the lines of the YEC ECU for my model of bike but these are quite rare and expensive things to find and still wanted to keep some of the stock features on my dash that the display losses when using the YEC unit. Also, after shopping about, I found that very few places were unable to flash my year of ECU, later years not a problem but not my year, or if they did, I was looking at, on average, £300-350 to flash it. For myself, I find that a bit steep for what it does/gives compared to what flashing the newer models offers, for that kind of money I would rather be able to spend that money on equipement and software that might enable me to do all this for myself and be able to adjust this as and when I do any modifications and tuning to better suit these mods.
At the moment I am doing the valve shims as per the 24,000 mile service and once they are set will be degreeing the cams to a different setting from standard. For the time being, until I get my head around flashing the ECU, I will take the bike to my dyno guys to check it once done but would love to have the ability to do this for myself using the ECU and not just the PC3.
So here goes with my questions,lol. I am trying to source the Yamaha Matching System through a friend of a friend but if that is not available to me, what programs/software would you guys recommend for me to use? I saw in a post by a member on here (christian pasini) a plug for the ECU of an R6 that is exactly the same plug as mine. I have a spare ECU and loom and noticed that on the reverse side of the plug there were certain pins that had no wires in them, only little blanking plugs, the pin numbers are 9,11,27,29,35,36, 37. Can anyone help me identify these pins and what function they allow? I also noticed another post where another member (rippedr1) had taken apart a 2002 ECU, will I need to go that far? From that post I learned what the processor is and already have the software from the manufacturer for when I am ready to use it.
From what I have learned on here so far, I understand some guys on here do this as a business so realise there may be some trade secrets that they might not be able to give away but any help, tips and information that can be made available to me would be gratefully received, thank you and sorry for the post being sooooo long, lol.
