Reading stock Denso ECU flash from external pins?

Hi everyone,

I just started reading about DIY stock ECU tuning around a week ago, researched / read everything I could find online so far. It looks like a lot of research here and elsewhere is fairly old, mostly around mid 2000s. I'm wondering what's the current state of the art on this.

The main questions that I still have are:

1. Is it now possible to read out the original ECU flash from external pins (K-Line, serial, other) without having to open up the ECU (AUD port)?
2a. If 1 is true, are there any freeware or open source software/libraries that work with generic hardware (non-proprietary or vendor specific) such as the various under $20 (Amazon, EBay, Aliexpress) USB/TTL adapters, USB/K-Line cable (FTDI VAG Com clones), even ELM327-based as last resort?
2b. If 1 is false, are the various tuning HW/SW kits for sale online that claim so all BS? I wouldn't want to spend $100+ to test, also my bike (Burgman AN650) is not on the supported list for the majority (if any).
3. What's the current largest public repository of definition files for the various freeware tuning softwares?
4. Is Renesas FDT still the default tool for writing the ECU?

My interest is being able to tinker at my discretion (somewhat safely, as I don't have a spare ECU) with my 2008 Suzuki Burgman AN650, not a one-time professional shop tune. I think the ECU on these is a Denso 32920-10Gx1 (where x is one of G, H or K) from internet research, I haven't checked on my bike yet. The initial focus is in trying to maximize MPG by playing with the fuel maps, ignition timing, EGR, maybe even CVT control. The plan is to make small incremental changes to the stock data, flash, test, repeat. But first I want to read out my current stock flash to be sure I have a working backup, not just find some stock bin on the internet (if any).

Thank you in advance for any informative replies.
